…Or just be a bit of everything?

I would have to say the biggest challenge about a capsule wardrobe isn't cutting down your clothing, it's deciding what style you think you are. Not to impose restrictions on yourself, but rather to find out what suits you. Chances are, you already have a defined style- you just don't know it.

The first step would be to go to your wardrobe, makes sure everything is hung up and nothing is in the wash. Go through each piece... have you worn it lately? Be honest. When you have all the pieces that you actually wear, what do they look like? Is it feminine? Tailored? Boho. What are the colours? Neutral? Bright and bold? Once you figure these things out, it makes it so much easier to determine what you actually like to wear instead of wearing because it's there.

Doing all this I discovered a few things about myself. I love to wear trousers, button up's, oversized sweaters and stripes all in neutral colours. I looked at people who's fashion I love and find myself styling to look that way. That's how I know I prefer to dress in an almost gamine fashion (think Audrey Hepburn), with modern and feminine touches. I love to mix leather with lace and fitted skinny jeans with an oversized sweater. What I wear is simple, tailored and basic, but I like to amp up with accessories.I can only tell you what works for me. I know my frame and body shape, I know what works for me and what doesn't. It's all trial and error. Once you've figured out what style you are makes it so much easier to find pieces that fit into your capsule wardrobe.
